The governing body have since doubled down on their plan, with the organisation believing that the tournament requires a significant overhaul.

Arteta has given his opinion, too, claiming that the prospect of fewer fixtures for the Gunners would be a positive, although it seemingly ignores lower-league concerns of minnows being robbed of the chance of playing at the Emirates, particularly if Arsenal are drawn away in the third round against an EFL, or even a non-league, club.

Arteta told reporters: "We can’t look at that in an isolated way, but with the calendar that we have with the players. I think it’s a very good possibility."
